...(mumutek(What is))...

What is Mumutek? That is the first question asked by those who learned about this project when it was first conceived. KLF, a techno group from the eighties, sang about the great Mumu, which if one listens to their songs carefully is some sort of techno deity. So what about tek? Well, a few years ago, I was sitting in a seminar at Cal Arts with my peers from the Integrated Media program, trying to come up with a name for the annual group show website. We were all throwing ideas out and all of a sudden technology and mumu collided in my mind, and I shouted "mumutek!" People laughed, but loved the sound, and so the word was a second runner up. (The official name of the IM site is http://www.integr8.net.) Mumutek stayed in my head for a few days, and then I decided to set up a website with this name. Given my interest in music, I decided to develop the site around musical projects, which could only be heard through the web.

The site will feature solo exhibitions as well as group shows. I am interested in presenting interactive graphics for experimental Jazz and Electronic music influenced by -- but not limited to -- Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Periodic submissions will be accepted. If you would like to know about the next submission deadline, please send a message to navasse@mumutek.net.

Enjoy the site, and feel free to e-mail me with comments and ideas that can help improve the principles behind this project.
