Week 17:
Week 16: Thursday, April 25, 2013
Thursday, April 18, 2013 Tuesday, April 16, 2013 Week 14: Thursday, April 11, 2013 Weekly Assignment , Part Two Develop a basic video based on the lecture presented during class, and upload it to YouTube then embed it in the page you created on Tuesday April 9. Design the page to look good based on your basic knowledge of html.
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 Weekly Assignment, Part one: Develop a basic html page with an image and a link to the outside. the page should include a selected text and a color background. The image should have a "_blank" target to open a bigger file of the same image on a separate browser window or tab.
Week 13: Thursday, April 4, 2013 Weekly Assignment, Part Two Due Tuesday April 9, 2013: Choose a template from the selections in thimble (https://thimble.webmaker.org/en-US/projects) and adjust it to match your own images and content. You need to upload your images to your psu server account and access each image according to its corresponding URL. For instance, if you look at any of the images in your examples available, you will notice that each image has a specific address. For the template "Open Web Gallery" (https://thimble.webmaker.org/en-US/projects/opengallery/edit) you will notice that the peacock image's address is: "http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2417/2149942020_a681cb7043.jpg" You can swap this for the address of your image available on your psu server, which will have a similar configuration. Simply copy and paste your own image address over the already existing address. For this assignment you don't need to change the layout (the actual look of the page), just the content. Swap images for your own and change the text for your own so that you present your own material.
Weekly assignment, Part One Due Thursday April 4: Choose two html templates from Thimble, and create two versions of a "pseudo-portfolio" of your choice: https://thimble.webmaker.org/en-US/projects For this introductory project, you don't need to upload you own images, just choose images from the web and swap the URL by copying and pasting into the area that you select within the template. You can also change the text for each section by selecting and typing or pasting your own text over it. Pay close attention to html tags as you manipulate them. This will help you learn some basic principles of html page tagging. For Thursday you will need to upload your own images to your psu server and access them from there. This exercise is preparing you for your final project, so make sure to experiment as much as possible.
Week 12: Thursday, March 28, 2013 Weekly Assignment, Part 1: Contribute to online forum on the four part documentary, The Century of the Self. Part 2: Become acquainted with the popcorn project: http://popcornjs.org/ Make a video project with Popcorn Maker that is not longer than 30 seconds, by taking video and sound from different videos already online as the tutorial above shows. You will then present this video to class on Tuesday, April 2.

Week 10: Thursday, March 14, 2013 Weekly Assignment, Due on March 19, 2013: Develop a basic cinemagraph of about two seconds, as practice for your third major project. You can approach it in the same way as your stop-motion looped animation. Your animation must present some type of tension: mystery, ambiguity, suspense, potential conflict, etc. It must appear to be a potentially defining moment if the loop were part of an actual story.
Thursday, March 7, 2013
Week 8 Thursday, February 28, 2013 Weekly Assignment due on Tuesday, March 12: Develop a time based piece consisting of at least 3 but no more than 10 still images that loop. The time of the loop is completely up to you, but must be no more than 5 seconds. You may use any software to develop the piece. The most straight forward application to do this is Photoshop. You can also use Final Cut, Flash, or After Effects if you prefer and already have basic skills. Develop the piece in reaction to David Crawford's subway animations: David Crawford: Think of a place or situation you want to photograph, or appropriate photographs that can be animated. You don't have to photograph people, but can choose to work with abstract settings/situations, places, or landscapes. If you appropriate pre-existing images, make sure to include the reference of your sources. Your animation must present some type of tension: mystery, ambiguity, suspense, potential conflict, etc. It must appear to be a potentially defining moment if the loop were part of an actual story.

Week 14 Sites for the Week of April 9, 2013
Must do your research (art of digging, Shadow): Pay attention to the editing, how do these commercial state the same thing when one is longer than the other. Also pay attention to issues of sex/gender: Levi's Commercial: A twist on expected genger roles (think of how the narrative is told based on recognizable signifiers): How to tell a basic narrative in 15 seconds and under: Beats of Boredom: How to tell a story with basic interactivity: Think of the narrative taking place through the dance as a type of template: NFL Mobile Commercial TOP 10 BEST MOBILE PHONE COMMERCIAL PROMO VIDEOS FULL HD 2005 - 2011 NEW YEAR EDITION: The aesthetic of the meme as the concept of passing something on (think of dance and the Eternal Moonwalk video as well): Think of how templates are developed to sell a concept in diferent forms: Blublu encapsulates the notion of constant movement found in all other examples above. This work, however, is done with still photography:
Week 13 Sites for the Week of April 2, 2013 https://thimble.webmaker.org/en-US/ Recommended by Katerina Kostadinova: Recommended by Brian Kristopher: "Feel This Moment" by Pitbull and Christina Aguilera: contains a sample of a ha's " Take on Me" "The Message," by Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five: "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," by Puff Daddy And Mase: Madonna's "Express Yourself" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsVcUzP_O_8) appears to have been an influence in Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV1FrqwZyKw) For your Popcorn Remix (part of your final project ), review Part two of Everything is a Remix, in which you can see how Lucas and Tarantino remake previous shots: Part two: http://vimeo.com/19447662 The reality is that just about every shot you will come up with for your video is already outthere somewhere. One thing you can do is think of researching and finding the right material (whether an actual formal shot, or just the aesthetic or overall feel of a work you find). To get a sense of the type of commitment that you must have to develop work of quality, see Christian Marclays' The Clock: http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1333 http://wexarts.org/exhibitions/christian-marclay-clock As a reference of an artwork that uses the concept of a comic-strip as the template to create non-linear narratives, see Graphik Dynamo: When you are looking at footage for your final project you must not just think of it as something to present or illustrate your idea, but something that you are actually changing by recontextualizing it: Mixmaster Mike Scratching: The above video of Mixmaster Mike is direct manipulation, but if you think of Graphik Dynamo's technic, conceptually they are doing the same thing as Mixmaster Mike. The artists are taking already exisiting material and twisting it into a new context. Week 12 Sites for the Week of March 26, 2013 Popcorn js: Popcorn Maker:
