Due: Project 2, Stop Motion (with sound) 12% Due Monday, September 23, 2015

Create a stop motion with sound. You must have at least three scenes (or different shots in different settings) for this assignment.

The basic rules of the first assignment are relevant for the second: the subject matter must be successful in two ways: 1) It must push the aesthetics of stop motion, meaning that the work would not be successful any other way, and 2) It must show a complexity through self-reference, meaning that the work gains its autonomy by acknowledging its limitations of stop motion while implementing sound.

You will do three versions of the same video:

Foundational Parameters:

  • You are to take stop motion video. You can do time lapse in order to accomplish a sequential sense of motion and narrative. You could use footage from the Zoller Gallery as people work in the space. Or you could use the objects found in the space to develop an experimental narrative.
  • You need to produce three videos using the same footage.
  • You can only edit the footage once, then use different sounds according to the instructions below.
  • For the first video, you must edit the footage and then add sounds that will enhance, support or help convey your initial message.
  • For your second video, take the first video and re-edit the sound to make it mean the opposite of your first. You may use some of the previously used sound or include an entirely new sound mix.
  • The sound for the third video must offer an in-between state of the other two videos. In other words, if your first video connotes "happy" and your second video connotes "sad" then your third video must fall somewhere between the two.

Additional Parameters:

  • The stop motion can be in black or white, color, or can use any special effects you may want to add with any software of your choice. You will be graded this time on the quality of your video and lighting.
  • Each video cannot be longer than 30 seconds, and cannot be less than 15 seconds.
  • You must shoot your own footage, but you can use some pre-existing material if it is necessary for your idea. Go over this option with the instructor before moving ahead.
  • It is encouraged that your video makes some type of commentary on an issue of your interest: politics, culture, gender, class difference, history of video art or formal aspects of video as a medium, or other subject you may be researching at the moment.
