Analysis of First Transmedia Project (The Matrix) 25%

Due: Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Your analysis consists of two parts:

1) A summary of all the texts you read on The Matrix. For each paper you should write about 250 words, in which you will include the following:

  • Basic argument of the paper
  • What is stated in the conclusion as a final argument in relation to the film.
  • Do you agree or disagree with the argument of the text? Why?

You will have to be brief and direct. Your main goal in the first part of the assignment is to demonstrate that you have read and understood the texts. You may reuse parts of your entries from the online forum discussions, and edit them to develop a 250 word summary.

2) Based on the experience you attained in writing the story for your first weekly assignment in class, and the knowledge you gained in studying and reading about The Matrix, develop a multimedia project that would be deployed across media much how The Matrix was. Please note that this project does not have to be about The Matrix but any subject that you are interested in. You are to apply your understanding of The Matrix being more than just a film to your project in order to make the medium/aspect of your choice believable. You don't need to have a full working project, but rather a well developed concept with at least one aspect fully developed. You have a few options to complete this part of the analysis.

  • if it's a game that you first envision, or that you already developed for another class, then you can use this part of the assignment as an opportunity to explore how you could turn the concepts behind the game into a story, a film, or an artwork.
  • If you have a story you want to expand, then you can use this part of the project to develop visuals, music, or a basic game concept.
  • If it's an image that you start with, then you can use this part of the project to develop a story, a game, or music.
  • If it's music you start with, then you can use it to develop projects that move across other media similarly to the other possibilities described above.

For the second part of this assignment consider closely the process you went through for your first weekly assignment. You can have the same approach but you will need to be professional about the project. In other words, you need to produce material that looks like the real thing. For instance, If you want to work on the concept of a game, then you will need to produce at least one element that makes this premise believable: the Game case cover, or an online page that promotes the game. The same goes for a film or a novel/short story. To get a sense of how to make your project believable, you need to do research and study how real production is deployed across media.
