User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) Design Project 20%

Due: Wednesday, November 9, 2016

Produce a video that documents the creative process behind the design of an imaginary app. For this third major project, you will reuse documentation of, or material from your previous weekly projects on UX and UI design. Make sure to review and revisit and/or redefine for yourself the initial parameters outlined for your weekly assignments (October 24 and November 2) preceding this third major project . As noted in the weekly projects, your imaginary app can focus on any subject of your choice, such as:

  • An app that makes art/design for the user (whatever this means for you)
  • An app that resolves or improves any impractical situation
  • An app that is a clear improvement of an already existing app
  • An app that makes possible the development of better apps (a meta app for app developers)

Consider the app according to Agamben's discussion of the apparatus. These are playful suggestions meant to push you to think beyond the obvious functional app. It is encouraged that you don't choose to work on common apps such as a "map app" or "find a restaurant app". You are encouraged to come up with your own ideas for the imaginary app. Make sure to discuss possibilities with your instructor to get the most of this process.

Outline of the process:

  • This project will take the form of a video no longer than 3 minutes (2 or less would be optimal) documenting your design process of an imaginary app.
  • Use all source material including image capture of your digital files, hand-sketches, photos and videos of you in the studio working on the concept development and design. Footage of relevant material that informs the development of the app can also be included.
  • Produce your video using stop motion/video montage techniques explored in your second major project. Make effective use of the three basic shots: the wide, mid and close up.
  • Make use of your understanding of image and text layout as explored in your first major assignment to create an engaging narrative.
  • Use text/type strategically in the form of subtitles, or chapter introduction for specific sections of your video in order to explain certain parts of your process as you move from the early creative stages to more advanced and/or final prototype of the imaginary app.
  • It may be necessary to develop a scripted narrative for a voice-over that explains the process of your app development. The voice-over can be completmented with type/subtitles throughout your video.
  • You are free to use any sound or images that will help enhance the narrative of your video.

Files to turn in:

  • The video documenting the process leading to your final design.
  • Sketches and final designs of your app.
  • A well designed print-out that shows the final proof of concept of your design.
