Project 1: Image and Text Project

Due: Thursday, September 14, 2017

Basic Guidelines:

  • Develop three visual compositions that explore the relation of image and text in terms of analogical and digital code. One composition should place an emphasis on the image (analogical code), the second should place importance on the text (digital code). This means that the first composition should make the visual elements more prominent, while the second composition should emphasize the textual message. And the third visual composition should demonstrate a balanced relation between image and text; in other words, neither the image nor the text should appear more pronounced or important.

Formal Variables:

  • For each composition consider having at least three elements (visual and textual), with at least one of them being text. The text could be a phrase or a single word. One way to emphasize or play down the reading aspects of the text is by using a single word or short phrase. Long phrases will likely present the text as reading rather than visual material, but this could be adjusted if the text is integrated to the overall composition with a visual sensitivity.

  • At least one of the elements must be created by the student. You should have a clear purpose when using pre-existing material. Make sure you discuss your images with the professor before the final presentation.

  • One of the compositions should have a sense of depth according to a dimensional relation of the objects in terms of background, middle-ground and foreground. Another should appear flat. Think of vector-like designs (single-color objects) which are usually implemented indesigns that appear to have no definite depth. Early Bauhaus posters are typical of this approach. The third image should combine a sense of depth and flatness.

Conceptual Variables:

  • Your visual compositions could question digital code and analogical code, or use this questioning as a means to reflect on a specific cultural issue of your choice.
