Project 2 Time-based, Image Sound and Text Media Project 20%

Due: Thursday, October 19, 2017

Create two videos that explore the creativity of editing. The second video will be a re-edit of the footage you used in your first video. Both videos will consist of the same footage edited in different order. Both videos must use at least one word (or a phrase) that plays a role in the narrative. The word (or phrase) must be different for each version. The point is to experience an open-narrative differently.

To get a sense of what you could do, also consider the following examples, which should help you get a better sense of how meaning can change based on re-editing of the same material:

Analysis of Pulp Fiction:

What Watching 'Memento' in Chronological Order Can Teach About Story Structure:

Look at final reels by students that have taken classes with me. Please note that these are examples for you to get a sense of how to use image and text, and other basic editing principles. The reels consist of various projects re-edited for a final version by the students. You are not expected to achieve their level of competency at this point. Strive to do your best based on your current knowledge:

Technical/Formal Requirements:

  • Both videos must last the same time, which can range from 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Both videos must use the three basic shots: wide, mid, and close-up
  • You must consider the rhythm in your editing as discussed in class critique. For instance, when you let a shot/image linger, it must be for a reason.
  • The sound should be mixed in order to complement but also to question the video footage.
  • You must have at least five scenes/shots to create a fairly complex story.
  • You will be graded this time on the quality of your video and lighting.
You must mix your sound well and not go into the red.
  • You must shoot your own footage, but you can use some pre-existing material if it is necessary for your idea. (Go over this option with the instructor before moving ahead.)
  • You can use any special effects you may want to add with any software of your choice, if you have this knowledge.
  • You are encouraged to develop a piece that is critical of a subject of your choice such as politics, race, ethnicity, class difference, etc.
