Project 2: Analysis of second new media art/design project

Due: Monday, October 26, 2015

Your analysis consists of two parts:

1) Develop a semiological map in the form of an infographic that presents information and qualitative research of a selected work of new media art/design.

Each student's method for gathering information will vary depending on the subject of research:

  • A textual work may require some form of text mining.
  • A film or video may require montage, color, threshold analysis, as well as sound analysis.
  • A video game may require selected screen captures (based on video methodologies) of key moments in gameplay.
  • Large amount of still images may require similar analysis to games and/or film.
  • A website or app may require reverse engineering analysis of its information organization.

Each project will need specific methodologies. You will be introduced to general methods during class lectures, complemented with tutorials, after which you must meet with the instructor to discuss what type of methodology best suits your project.

In all cases, the analysis should focus on pattern recognition in order to develop a strong structural understanding of how content and form are combined to deliver a message to the viewer/user. You must also develop an informed argument on the social implications of such message.

Development of the semiological map as an infographic:

  • Take the research you developed for the new media work and use it to analyze the work's flow/chain of signification. You must map out in your infograph the following in clear fashion:
    1) Principal sign/form/signification
    2) What other forms/signs are involved in creating the principal sign/form/signification
    3) How meaning becomes attached to the principal sign/form/signification
    4) How abstract signifieds (ideas/concepts with no specific form) are part of the chain of signification

  • Your semiological map must make use of the following terms when outlining the flow of meaning:
signifier, signified, sign, signification, form, concept, acoustic image, language object
  • implement the quantitative and qualitative material you gathered in your research within the semiological map to show how the work is constructed in terms of content and form.
  • Use the infograph to support your informed argument on the social implications the work appears to be exploring. (see second part below)

For the infographic you need to consider:

  • The information is presented as clearly as possible.
  • The design is elegant and to the point.
  • The information included is as accurate as possible based on the tools and techniques you implemented.

2) Write a text that explains how the infograph outlines the flow of signification:

  • In 500 words:Give the name of the artist/s and the basic premise of the work. Briefly explain your personal interaction with the work and how this affected your decisions in gathering the material to visualize your analysis as an infographic. Explain how your infographic supports your understanding of the work using the language of semiotics. Explain the social implications of the work, and how you relate to such implications.
  • Your paper must list all sources you used to develop your analysis.

You will need to edit well in order to write answers that are precise and to the point.
