Part 1 of Project 3 Released, due on December 2, 2015 Weekly Assignment due on November 18, 2016 | To be critiqued on Angel: Develop a 15 to 30 second experimental video on any subject of your choice. Technical parameters:
at least one close-up, one mid-shot, and a wide-shot. Implement sound that questions the video footage. For example, if the footage is of a happy moment, then the sound should be sad, or violent, or ambiguous enough that the viewer will question the idea of happiness, or not think of happiness at all. Implement text that complicates the relationship of the image and sound. You should consider the typeface carefully; choose one that connotes something specific (violence, elegance, ephemerality, leisure, etc). You can use text as much as needed. The text must be treated as a visual element, not as something to read. It must become one with the image and the sound. You should consider your lighting and sound mix, and should use them to also convey meaning. Upload all files to Box and provide proper access with a link via Angel. Wednesday, August 26, 2015Lecture on music as an art form | Overview of sound editing for weekly assignment | Begin discussion of Benjamin's "The Work of Art..." | Read: "Culture and Remix" by Eduardo Navas, The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies, pp. 116 - 132.
Weekly Assignment due on September 2:Record three separate sounds from your immediate environment. You can use your phone, or any other device to do this. Then edit the sounds in any software you already use to have some type of rhythm that defies a coherent pattern. Note that the requirement of this assignment is a contradiction (rhythm/ pattern/ defiance) which you need to consider in order to develop a sound piece that questions how we record and expect to hear sound.
